On Saturday, November 3rd, 2007, at 10:00AM, Friends of St. John’s Historic Cemetery celebrated its 7th Annual All Saints Day. The entire service lasted less than one hour.

Dr. Wesley H. Wachob, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Pensacola is a scholar-theologian and an exciting, inspirational preacher. We were blessed with his message! Ed Nickinson provided music.

St. John’s Historic Cemetery, founded in 1876 is the largest cemetery in Escambia County with over 10,000 grave sites including: Edward A. Perry, Florida’s 14th governor; Mary Willis Lewis Willis, niece and closest descendent of George Washington; several Florida supreme court justices;10 Pensacola mayors; 3 Confederate generals; and over 150 teachers and educators.

7th Annual Commemoration Day honoring The Memorable Women in St. John's

On Saturday, May 26, 2007, at 10:00AM, Friends of St. John’s Historic Cemetery celebrated its 7th Annual Commemoration Day honoring “The Memorable Women in St. John’s”. The entire service lasted less than one hour. The cemetery entrance is located just west of downtown at G Street and Belmont. The public was invited at no charge.

Dr. John Cavanaugh, President of UWF was the guest speaker.

We honored The Memorable Women of St. John’s and had readings and comments about a few of them: Vera Lawbaugh (leader in Pensacola Little Theater; the annual Vera Award is named for her; Donna Quinn commented); Mary Turner Rule Reed, community activist and leader (Earle Bowden commented about her large role in preserving the Historic District and the Gulf Islands National Seashore); Mary Janice Henderson Thornton, outstanding artist (her niece, Jane Merrill, commented); Lucy Warren Pierpont, early leader of the Music Study Club (she worked for proper recognition of her father-in-law’s writing the popular “Jingle Bells”; her granddaughter, Margery Hargreaves commented); and Pat Lloyd, PNJ writer and community catalyst (Earle Bowden commented).
